Death, card thirteen. This tarot card is the one that makes people nervous at a reading, and it was also the card Waite was most insistent about correcting. The skeleton rides slowly, carrying a black banner emblazoned with a white rose which is the symbol of life, not its absence. Behind him, the sun rises between two pillars. King, child, maiden, and prelate fall before him equally, all people fall before death eventually. Waite called it transformation, passage from lower to higher, the veil of life perpetuated in change. The card isn't about dying. It's about what you become when something in you finally does.
